June Hunt starts her study with a favorite scripture I share
often in my ministry Matthew 11:28-30. We all long for rest and freedom from
stress. My sister had driven 3 hours for a quick overnight stay to visit a
cousin in rehab. Complications changed her plans dramatically and she was
frustrated and stressed. Stress is
defined as pressure often self-induced, some negative and some positive. Hunt
uses Abraham Lincoln and the Apostle Paul to show how the two men differed in
handling their stress. Many lined sheets are included to ponder the reasons for
our stress and how scripture can help us cope. Psalm 22 shows how David cried
out to the Lord in his distress. Chapter 2 uses a traffic light to illustrate
the four stages of stress from no light-“insufficient stress” to the color red light-“burnout.”
I never thought about insufficient stress as causing lack of purpose and
unproductive. This book seems more of a journal for pondering our own
experiences with stress. Coincidentally, Hunt reveals a side of Lincoln that I had
never discovered. Checklists for monitoring your stress are very helpful. Sessions 4-7 give causes for stress and the biblical
solutions for stress. I can see this is a resource that could be used for self reflection as well as teaching. This book was given to me by Rose for an honest review.
